Pro-choice activists invited the public for an open discussion on abortion

A group of pro-choice activists today invited the public to join an open conversation on abortion in Valletta. They argued that more people than ever before believe in the need to decriminalise abortion, but acknowledged that continued dialogue is essential to address the stigma that persists within Maltese society.

The event offered a welcoming and open space for participants to share their concerns. Rather than viewing the abortion debate as a simple black-and-white issue, the activists encouraged people to consider each story on its own merits, fostering empathy and understanding.

Activists are encouraging people to speak openly about their abortion experiences to help break the silence and stigma surrounding the issue. When personal stories remain unheard, abortion continues to be perceived as a rare occurrence, though, in reality, more than one person in Malta seeks an abortion every day. The fear of speaking out prevents meaningful conversations that could lead to greater tolerance and empathy among those opposed to abortion.

We are also inviting the public to join us this Saturday, 28th September, at 5pm in Castille Square for a rally where we will march in solidarity and call on the government to act and decriminalise abortion. At the event, Doctors for Choice will also unveil a bold new campaign — the first of its kind in Malta — involving several courageous women.

Attivisti favur l-għażla jistiednu lill-pubbliku għal diskussjoni miftuħa dwar l-abort

Illum ġewwa l-Belt Valletta, grupp ta’ attivisti favur l-għażla stiednu lill-pubbliku sabiex jipparteċipaw f’konverżazzjoni miftuħa dwar l-abort. Sostnew kif illum, aktar nies minn qatt qabel jemmnu fil-ħtieġa li jiġi dekriminalizzat l-abort. Irrikonoxxew ukoll li d-djalogu kontinwu huwa essenzjali sabiex tiġi indirizzata l-istigma fis-soċjetà Maltija fejn jidħol dan is-suġġett.

L-attività offriet spazju miftuħ għall-parteċipanti sabiex jaqsmu l-ħsibijiet tagħhom. L-attivisti iħeġġu lin-nies sabiex ma jarawx id-dibattitu dwar l-abort bħala wieħed ta’ ‘jew iswed jew abjad’, imma jikkunsidraw kull storja fuq il-merti tagħha stess, sabiex titrawwem sens ta’ empatija u ftehim.

L-attivisti qed iħeġġu lin-nies jitkellmu b’mod miftuħ dwar l-esperjenzi personali tagħhom tal-abort, biex jibda jitkisser il-ħajt ta’ silenzju u stigma madwar is-suġġett. Meta l-istejjer personali jibqgħu ma jinstemgħux, l-abort qed ikompli jiġi mħares bħala xi ħaġa rari, meta fir-realtà, aktar minn persuna waħda kuljum f’Malta tfittex li tagħmel abort. L-esperjenzi joħolqu konverżazzjoni li tant għandna bżonn, biex finalment twassal għal iktar tolleranza u empatija fost dawk li jopponu l-abort.

Qed nistiednu wkoll lill-pubbliku biex dan is-Sibt, 28 ta’ Settembru, fil-5pm jingħaqdu magħna minn Pjazza Kastilja, f’mixja b’solidarjetà, sabiex nappellaw lill-Gvern biex jieħu azzjoni biex l-abort ma jibqax kriminalizzat. Waqt l-attività, l-għaqda Doctors for Choice se tiżvela wkoll kampanja ġdida — kampanja tal-ewwel tax-xorta tagħha f’Malta — li tinvolvi diversi nisa kuraġġużi.
