Public being kept in the dark on Mosta trees’ poisoning

Following its initial demands addressed to the Environmental Minister, the ERA and the Mosta Local Council, Moviment Graffitti has now issued a second letter insisting that the public be given an update regarding the ficus trees in Mosta square.

Moviment Graffitti’s first inquiry was sent after receiving multiple reports that large holes had appeared in the trunks of the ficus trees in Mosta square and that liquid was being poured into them. In the inquiry, Moviment Graffitti demanded that the concerned authorities investigate this alarming issue and inform the public on what the holes are, what is the liquid in and around them, and what is the care plan to help the trees recover.

These demands were put forward in the context of last year’s incident, when the Local Council, with ERA’s blessing, attempted to stealthily remove the trees, before being stopped by the community’s strong opposition to this move. It is highly improbable that the damage done to the trees a few weeks ago is unrelated to November’s attempt to remove them.

ERA responded to the initial inquiry stating that a police investigation was ongoing, to which Moviment Graffitti immediately reacted, insisting that the public be informed and updated regarding the issue, as is their right.

After three weeks of silence from the concerned authorities, Moviment Graffitti has now addressed a letter to Miriam Dalli, Minister for the Environment, the Commissioner of the Malta Police Force, the ERA, and the Mosta Local Council, demanding information regarding the investigation, the current status of the trees’ health, and the way forward.

Il-pubbliku jinżamm fl-għama dwar l-ivvalenar tas-siġar tal-Mosta

Wara l-ewwel talbiet tiegħu indirizzati lill-Ministru għall-Ambjent, lill-Awtorità għall-Ambjent u r-Riżorsi (l-ERA) u lill-Kunsill Lokali tal-Mosta, il-Moviment Graffitti issa ħareġ it-tieni ittra fejn qed jinsisti li l-pubbliku għandu jingħata aġġornament dwar is-siġar tal-fikus fil-pjazza tal-Mosta.

L-ewwel talba tal-Moviment Graffitti ntbagħtet wara li rċevejna diversi rapporti dwar toqob kbar li dehru fiz-zkuk tas-siġar tal-fikus fil-pjazza tal-Mosta u likwidu li kien qed jitferra’ fihom. F’din it-talba, il-Moviment Graffitti talab li l-awtoritajiet konċernati jinvestigaw din il-kwistjoni allarmanti u jinfurmaw lill-pubbliku dwar x’inhuma t-toqob, x’inhu l-likwidu fihom u madwarhom, u x’inhu l-pjan ta’ kura biex is-siġar jiġu megħjuna jirkupraw.

Dawn it-talbiet tressqu fil-kuntest tal-inċident tas-sena l-oħra, meta l-Kunsill Lokali, bil-barka tal-ERA, ipprova jneħħi s-siġar bil-moħbi, qabel ma twaqqaf mill-oppożizzjoni qawwija tal-komunità. Huwa improbabbli ħafna li l-ħsara li saret lis-siġar ftit ġimgħat ilu mhijiex relatata mat-tentattiv ta’ Novembru biex jitneħħew.

L-ERA mbagħad ippubblikat id-dikjarazzjoni tagħha stess fejn enfasizzat li kienet għaddejja investigazzjoni tal-pulizija. Il-Moviment Graffitti mill-ewwel irreaġixxa, u saħaq li l-pubbliku għandu dritt li jkun infurmat u aġġornat dwar il-kwistjoni.

Wara tliet ġimgħat ta’ silenzju mill-awtoritajiet konċernati, il-Moviment Graffitti issa indirizza ittra lil Ministru għall-Ambjent Miriam Dalli, lill-Kummissarju tal-Korp tal-Pulizija ta’ Malta, lill-ERA, u lill-Kunsill Lokali tal-Mosta, fejn talab għal informazzjoni dwar l-investigazzjoni, l-istat attwali tas-saħħa tas-siġar, u l-passi li jmiss.
